“The ISCB Student Council is a warm and welcoming community. From my very first involvement, this vibrant organisation has felt like a group of friends that are enthusiastic to learn and to share experience about computational biology. Therefore, I could not be more motivated to support the goals of this organisation, currently from my role as Executive Team Member & Treasurer. – Bart Cuypers”
About:
Dr. Bart Cuypers is a molecular systems biologist who develops and applies multi ‘omic’ approaches to unravel the molecular biology and resistance mechanisms of pathogens. Currently, he holds a shared position between the Adrem Data Lab (University of Antwerp) and the Molecular Parasitology Unit (Institute of Tropical Medicine). He has a background in biology (bachelor’s degree) and cell- and systems biology (master’s degree). During his PhD he studied the functional and adaptive role of aneuploidy and gene copy number variation in the protozoan parasite Leishmania, a life-threatening pathogen of which the molecular biology is still elusive. As such, he worked on the collection, analysis, integration and interpretation of (epi-) genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics data over a wide array of genetic backgrounds, life stages and resistance profiles.
Bart started his involvement in the ISCB-Student Council (SC) in 2013 by joining RSG Belgium. He was president of RSG Belgium from 2014-2016 and is still an active board member today. Internationally, he was involved in the organisation of SCS2015, ESCS2016, SCS2017, SCS2018 and chaired SCS2016 in Orlando. Acknowledging the importance of collaborations and sharing experiences between different national RSGs, he started the BeNeLuxFra symposium series, with 4 editions so far. Further investing in these collaborations, he became RSG Europe Chair from 2016 to 2018. Currently, he is assisting all RSGs around the world and all SC symposia through the management and optimisation of the SC finances.
